Holding my watering can

So this is the last official week of May.  I don’t know about you, but I still have a few things to plant before the scorcher summer season begins.  And if this week’s forecast is any foreshadowing for what is to come, we all need to prepare for a hot summer. Oh wait that is every NC summer.

While I joke, “forever hold your watering can” you know if you have ever gardened in NC you will have to hold that watering can regardless of when you plant things.  But the point of this post is to jump into action and give yourself a final deadline to finish your spring planting. If you wait much longer, your plants won’t be able to establish, especially root development, well enough to endure the hot summer ahead.

Here is a to do list to consider for this final full week of May:

1)Plant the rest of your flowers and veggetables

2)Fertilize with a 3-4 month feed (we recommend Osmocote)

3)Mulch your beds

4)Set up any watering system, i.e. soaker hoses, etc.

Just a side note, for those newly planted trees and shrubs, you will need to water them diligently for 2-3 seasons before they fully establish.

While this weekend is a holiday weekend, you may want to block out some time to finish your spring plantings and prepare for the summer.

Pots will always have to be watered

Happy Gardening!
